"Make It Work!" Reviewing Gunn's Golden Rules

Fans of Lifetime's Project Runway will find lots to love in this book by the increasingly iconic Tim Gunn, he of the catchphrase "Make it Work!"

Huh?

"What 'make it work' means is that you should use what you have on hand to transform your situation," writes Gunn, who structures his memoir in the form of a self-help book, taglined "Life's Little Lessons for Making it Work." Readers will find a series of Gunn's own raise-yourself-up rules, from "The World Owes You... Nothing" (Rule 2) to "Never Underestimate Karma" (Rule 6) and my favorite, Rule 10: "Be a Good Guest or Stay Home (I Won't Judge You -- I Hate Parties)."

Gunn's golden rules are like perfectly arranged garment bags containing couture-crafted life stories. These come in the form of (often silly) tell-alls on the sassy charm of New York fashionistas including Martha Stewart, Heidi Klum, Michael Kors and especially Anna Wintour, queenlike editor-in-chief of Vogue magazine. There's even a J.Edgar Hoover/Vivan Vance story. It's not all gossip and glitz; there's plenty of uplifting moral fable in this book, all centered on the notion that it's best to empower yourself, treat others with kindness. "Everyone should give back," he adds.

We give it four and a half golden apples, out of a possible five.

This book seemed fun as the calendar turns toward spring and warmer weather. It is not really a fancy cuisine book or anything like that; instead, it’s just a simple, get-to-the-point book about making gelato (or sorbetto) for yourself at home. (If you would rather someone else make your gelato for you, stop by Park Central Branch and ask us where to go. There are at least two downtown locations selling this Italian frozen dessert. We can point you on your way.)

The key thing about gelato is not that gelato is difficult. It’s not that gelato is even necessarily Italian: gelato has been so enthusiastically Americanized in the past decade that this book offers 26 recipe-packed pages of “American Favorites,” to go along with even more recipes for “Italian Classics” and “Basics.” You can literally gelato your way around the planet with this book.

Actually, gelato is different from ice cream, but not too different. Quoting Messrs. Pearce and Zecchin: “Gelato contains less fat and less air than ice cream, which allows the flavor of its ingredients to come through.” (p. 13) Gelato pretty much always contains egg yolks; ice cream doesn’t have to.

The minute this book arrived on shelf here at Park Central Branch, one of our staff (me) had a whale of a time testing it out at home. Equipment included: saucepan, whisk, measuring cups, kitchen thermometer, coffee grinder, and a super-cheap ice-cream maker found at a local big-box store. Ingredients, apart from flavorings, included milk, cream, egg yolks, sugar.

It turns out this was all I needed to create Plain Gelato Base (p. 22), which is the custard foundation of gelato. In Italy, Plain Gelato Base is called gelato di crema and often frozen and served as-is. Or you can add flavorings like vanilla, hazelnut or coffee.

The cookbook authors listed out simple-to-follow instructions on how to mix and cook the perfect Plain Gelato Base. After 20 or 30 minutes’ work on the base, I proceeded to choose an “Italian Classic” gelato flavoring to try. I was completely seduced by Pistachio Gelato (p. 47), but I had no pistachios in the house and no desire to make special purchases. What I did have: some leftover almonds rolled in cocoa powder. So I followed the directions in every other aspect, but swapped chocolatey almonds for pistachios.

This worked out just fine. After a few hours of custard-chilling, I ground up my almonds and threw in some almond extract, then ran the custard/flavoring mix through my cheapo ice-cream maker. I let it ripen in the freezer all afternoon. Ta-da... gelato! Easier (and more quickly!) said than done, but not excruciatingly difficult at all.

It made for a nifty special dessert, as the family task for the night was to throw a little thank-you dinner for a friend. Yay special treats and hospitality!

We give this book: four gelato scoops out of a possible five. (Who could eat that much? That’s right: me.)

History is like broccoli.

Everyone knows it’s good for you. You know: ”those who don’t learn from history are condemned to repeat it,” and all that good stuff.

There are many fine souls who really enjoy reading history. There are others, equally fine folks, who happen to find history kind of sour and uninspired. Something they should eat but would never crunch on with gusto.

Like broccoli, sometimes history needs dressing up with another flavor, just so we can find it palatable and fun. That’s where The Mental Floss History of the United States comes in. If American History is the humble floret on your dinner plate (follow the metaphor!), then the smart-alecks at Mental_floss magazine (“where knowledge junkies get their fix”) have written this zesty little book in hopes of covering your broccoli with delicious Velveeta cheez sauce.

TMFHUS gives you the “(Almost)Complete and (Entirely) Entertaining Story of America,” from the first humans to cross over from Siberia 25,000 years ago, all the way through various and sundry political debates of 2010.

Along the way, you’ll learn a host of things you may never have been exposed to in grade school: why there were 13 states, not 13 colonies, at the founding of the American Republic (p. 10), how Abraham Lincoln actually arrested newspaper editors during the Civil War (p. 117), plus the entire backstory of America’s involvement in the Persian Gulf, condensed down to just a few hundred words (p. 344).

The book is 410 pages, but it reads like half that. Everything is laid out in a very “magazine-y” style, and the tone of the book doesn’t take anything--or any political perspective--too seriously. It’s light and fun--almost like Bridalplasty or some really great cat pictures.

It's also good for you. You know: Those who don’t learn from history are condemned to repeat it. And all that good stuff.

Are you an aspiring artist? If you're a musician/filmmaker/poet/painter/writer/chef -- freelance anything, really -- with serious dreams, you may well be confronted with daily reminders of what you’ve gotten yourself into, economics-wise. It’s called Supply and Demand. The Supply of would-be artists is always much bigger than the general population’s Demand for art and arty things.

Enter the Day Job. Artists bravely march out into the real world, dressing up for day jobs that pay the bills, “saving your ‘real’ self for the cracks and corners of your off time.” Off Time being the time when artists scribble down new songs and sketches and screenplays, hoping, always hoping, for a Big Break.

But Big Breaks don’t always come, or come right at first bat. This would be a terrible bummer if it weren’t for inspirational books for aspirational people, like this short-n-sweet little number from Summer Pierre, a Brooklyn, N.Y.-based artist/writer/musician (with a day job).

Artist in the Office shows wannabe art-folk that professional success is not so much about the Big Break. It’s more about the Small Step. A couple examples:

>> Can’t get that screenplay written? Use each lunch hour to type some dialogue; then try not to moan and groan that you “don’t have enough time” to pursue your Sundance dreams. (Because who can dream and complain at the same time?) After enough lunch hours, you’ll at least have a screenplay, which is step one if you ever want Robert Redford’s attention.

>> Bored with your day job? Move out of “Why-I-Hate-Where-I-Workville” by cutting back on the gossip (see previous paragraph). Instead, find ways to integrate your talents into your day job. Just keep it appropriate and make sure your actual work gets accomplished.

Done the right way, bringing your creative self to work is what bosses call “taking initiative.” Which brings us to a core message of this book: Initiative—motivation—gumption—chutzpah—call it what you will, you’ll need a lot of it to start a career in the arts. So don’t panic. Seize the day and start small.

This collaborative downtown happening takes place from 1 to 5 p.m. the third Saturday of each month, powered by First Friday Art Walk and the Downtown Springfield Association. Designed as a casual, family-friendly daytime event, Center City Saturday strives to introduce visitors of all ages to the art, culture, entertainment, fashion, food and fun of the downtown arts district.

Wonders For Your Eyes:
Beginning at dusk, we'll have artist Joey Borovicka on hand to meet and greet Library visitors and discuss his exhibit of paintings that graces Park Central's display walls this month.

Borovicka's work is playful and challenging, with no contradiction in those two terms. Says the artist: "Some of my paintings are imaginary landscapes—escapist hiding places such caves, subglacial lakes, and alien topographies that offer unlimited opportunity to play with color, pattern, texture, and mood. Others are disaster scenes."

Melodies For Your Ears:
Beginning at 7 p.m., The Doerfels take the Community Stage for one of our FREE, all-ages shows. This locally based band blends rock, bluegrass, gospel, country and jazz to form a progressive acoustic sound. When you listen to them play, "you don't try to analyze it... you simply melt into it." The Doerfuls are TJ Doerfel, Kim Doerfel, Eddy Doerfel, Joey Doerfel and Ben Doerfel... you can even preview their music!

OTC's "Art of Discovery" gallery show

Ozarks Technical Community College's Portfolio Development Class has an exhibit here at Park Central Branch Library entitled "Art of Discovery." This special one-week gallery show graces our walls tomorrow (Wednesday, April 28) through Tuesday, May 4.

A special reception takes place 4:30-6:30 p.m. this Friday, April 30, with coffee provided by The Coffee Ethic. Live music (to be announced) graces the Community Stage.

Animated Film Series: Toy Story!

Tonight at 7 p.m.: “Toy Story,” rated G. This 1995 American film, directed by John Lasseter, was one of the first computer-animated family movies. Fun for the kids, and kids at heart, the show features the vocal talents of Tom Hanks, Tim Allen and others.

Tomorrow night, we're presenting "How To... Knit." Always wanted to learn how to knit? DIY crafter Rebecca Shuler will teach basic knitting and show how a few skills can be used to create many different designs. That's Friday, April 16 at 7 p.m. Materials provided.

Our "How To..." series is designed to make your downtown Library a clearinghouse for fun, engaging sessions on the topics you're interested in -- hobbies, arts, skills and more. Next month (May 21): "How To... Write a Song Like the Scribbles."

Triple the fun with April's First Friday Art Walk

We're kicking off spring with a very neat First Friday Art Walk tonight! Let us count the ways.

1. Art in literary/baked form: April 2 at Park Central Branch Library, local bakers will show off their creativity in a competition to kick off the Big Read for 2010. Contestants including June’s Cakery, Cameo Cakes, Party Pizazz Cakes and (downtown neighbors) Amycakes will design “edible books” for display during First Friday Art Walk. This event starts around 5; winners in a variety of categories will be announced at 7 p.m., then we’ll eat the “books.”

2. Even more dessert: At 7:10 p.m., students from the Victory Trade School will compete to create desserts that best represent the Big Read book, Richard Peck's A Long Way from Chicago. VTS students, under the direction of Executive Chef/Instructor Chadwick Isom, hit the stage at 7:10 p.m. to assemble and present delicious representations of Mr. Peck's book. Funny man Mark Gideon emcees. Stick around for a taste of these special treats.

3. Visual art by visual artists: Our ongoing series of exhibits by emerging and established artists swings in the "emerging" direction this month with a fantastic student show. Students from Fordland Middle School, along with art teacher Julie Taylor, will be on hand with many of their works on display. The project: to document their community in digital photographs. Megan Kirsop discusses Mayan textiles in tonight's First Thursday Art Talk, 7 p.m. on our Community Stage. Following her talk, Megan (an art-history major at Missouri State) will lead a Q & A session.

Megan's talk expands on a presentation she gave at the annual intercollegiate Art History Symposium 2008, a competitive symposium coordinated by Dr. Catherine Jolivette of the Department of Art and Design at Missouri State.

First Thursday is our artsy and fantastic kickoff event. It takes place each month, the evening before First Friday Art Walk festivities. The talks -- on major artists, issues in the contemporary art world, and movements in art history -- are brought to you in partnership with Missouri State University's art history department.

Tonight beginning at 7 p.m. our Community Stage hosts Open-Nic Night for musicians, poets and performers. That's right, Open-Mic Night is now on stage monthly, 3rd Thursdays at 7 p.m.

Last month's Open-Mic night was a hit. The morning after, this is what we posted to our Facebook page:

Park Central Sounds: Fancy it up!

Tonight we're hosting the Lowdown Fancy for a free, all-ages show, starting at 7 p.m. This hometown country-funk band features the talents of four veterans of Ozarks music. (You can preview songs here and here.)

About the band: You know Bo Brown (bass, dobro, mandoline, guitar, vocals) from Hogmolly, the Undergrass Boys and other bands.

Aaron Holmes (drums, vocals) has been playing for more than a decade, most recently in the Sociables.

Mike Henderson (guitar, bass, vocals) plays with several local bands, including a Beatles tribute group, the Silver Hammer Band.

Steve Ames (vocals, guitar, base ) was the frontman for a variety of local bands and is also active in the Springfield theatre scene. You may have seen him onstage at Vandivort Centre Theatre, Springfield Little Theatre, Missouri State University and the Springfield Regional Opera.

First Friday Art Walk feat. Allan Burch, North Decade and more!

Join Park Central Branch Library and a community of art-lovers for First Friday Art Walk, a monthly cultural happening in downtown Springfield. This month, the fun starts tonight (Friday, March 5) at 7 p.m., when you can meet Allan Burch and discuss his art on display.

Allan Burch is an artist and illustrator based in rural southern Missouri. His thoughtful images meld visual influences from the work of Impressionist masters and pop-culture ephemera. Expressive color, a sense of mood, and energetic marks that reflect the human touch are just some of the ways Allan connects with viewers on an emotional level. (Image courtesy Allan Burch.)

Starting at 7 p.m., local band the North Decade -- including rockers Ryan Spilken, Josh Jenkins, Brad Cantrell and Jessica Gray -- will also be on the Community Stage. They count among their influences "Willie Nelson, Wilco, Wonder Woman, William Tell" -- a diverse, dynamic mix!

Next month (April 2 at 7 p.m.): Enjoy the tasty delight that the Edible Book Festival promises. Also: Meet art teacher Julie Taylor and her students from Fordland Middle School. They're presenting a series of photographic works on the theme of "Community."

Anime comes to the Animated Film Series

One of your downtown Library's signature events is the Animated Film Series... enjoy animated films from across the globe, every fourth Friday of the month.

This month's film -- showing tonight (Feb. 26) at 7 p.m. -- is Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, rated PG-13. Written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki, Nausicaä is an anime film produced in 1984, based on a manga with the same title.

Nausicaä is considered the founding work of Studio Ghibli, one of Japan's most prominent anime studios. The story is an environmental fable featuring the adventures of Princess Nausicaä as she seeks to bring harmony between humans and their giant insect neighbors, 1,000 years after fire and biological weapons destroyed civilzation and most of Earth's ecosystem.

A network of art galleries and other venues are teaming up to show families a good time downtown, while the sun's out on a weekend afternoon.

February's Park Central Artist
Here at the Library, southwest Missouri artist Faye Clifton has a show on display entitled "Fierce Awakening."

Says Clifton in her artist's statement: "I have found this body of work to be an awakening for me as an artist. In the past my artwork said 'fear' to others. This body of work no longer says fear, but instead it says 'Fierce.'

"I enjoy all forms of art and therefore this show includes a variety of art mediums. I have always found trees to be inspirational, and their presence is evident in many of these works."

As part of the First Friday festivities, Clifton will be here in person to discuss her art this evening.

First Friday Music
Our Community Stage plays host to Say Yes! to Michigan!, a fantastic Springfield rock band made up of students from our local high schools. Come out for this FREE, all-ages show, starting at 7 p.m.

Art and the Environment, with John Coleman

Springfield artist John Coleman joins us tonight at 7 p.m. to discuss "Art and the Environment" for our ongoing First Thursday Art Talk series. (It's what we do to whip up excitement each First Friday eve!)

Coleman is a student of painting, sculpture and art history at Missouri State University. His recent work, a series of sculptures in topographic forms, has been shown in exhibits at Missouri State's new Brick City Gallery and at The Coffee Ethic, among other venues.

Art film: How to Draw a Bunny

Park Central library's is downtown's place where information meets the arts, so in that spirit we're showing How to Draw a Bunny at 7 p.m. tomorrow night (Thursday, January 7).

The 2002 film is an unrated documentary about the American artist Ray Johnson, a contemporary of Andy Warhol's in the Pop Art era. Johnson is known as a superior collage artist and the "founding father" of mail art. Dubbed "New York's most famous unknown artist," Johnson's reclusive life and brilliant career were wrapped in mystery, even after his death.

The filmmakers interview noted artists such as Christo (of orange gates in Central Park in 2005 fame), Chuck Close, Roy Lichtenstein, and others, by way of illustrating a fascinating artist's biography.

As you make your New Year's Eve plans, keep in mind your downtown Library is open to serve you today, from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

But there's more. Now that we're turning the page on 2009, Park Central Branch Library is celebrating First Night Springfield beginning this afternoon at 5:30 p.m.

First Night is Springfield's 20-year tradition of a family-oriented, alcohol-free New Year's Eve celebration, taking place in 10 venues downtown. At Park Central, the fun includes musical performances by local bands Lowdown Fancy and Jah Kings.

At other First Night venues, you'll see local talent Wingtips; FORBIDDEN OPERA; Nick, Ruell & Ned the Band; the comedians of the Skinny Improv and a fireworks finale with Kim Crosby. There are also hands-on activities for kids, including face-painting and finger puppets. There will be something for everyone in your family to enjoy!

How does it work at your Library? Today we're open for regular business until 5 p.m.

At 5:30 p.m., Park Central Branch Library reopens as a First Night Springfield venue. A First Night button is required for entry at that time until the end of the night... buttons are available for $7 each or $25 for a family four-pack.

Center City Saturday is almost here!

What's that?

Center City Saturday was created by members of downtown Springfield's Art Walk in fall 2009. The idea works like this: the neighborhood's shops, art galleries and even your Library offer family-oriented fun on a Saturday afternoon -- showing that downtown culture is about kid time, too!

CC Saturday's organizers even put together this map [.pdf] to help you get around, along with information about downtown parking [.pdf].

To highlight the season, we'll be showing a few holiday/wintry flicks on our big projector wall -- everything rated G or PG -- this Saturday, December 19 from 1 to around 5 p.m.

Parents, keep in mind that your downtown Library also has a fully stocked kids' and teens' sections, multiple stations for internet access, newspapers and magazines from around the world, and a great coffee shop next door to warm you up on a chilly holiday weekend.

As always, there's a ton of stuff going on in downtown Springfield this evening in honor of First Friday Art Walk.

At Park Central Branch Library, we are showing photography by Corey Brown. She will be at the library during Art Walk to talk to visitors and answer questions. Corey owns her own business, Corey Brown Photography, where she does portraits of people... and dogs. "I am a huge fan of capturing personality," says Brown. "...genuine laughs and honest moments."

We're also hosting some wonderful music from our friend Dallas Jones. It's tonight at 7 p.m. on our Community Stage -- please note the time change from last month. Come out for this FREE, all-ages show. It will be awesome.

Park Central Branch Library is hosting a holiday movie marathon including The Polar Express (Rated G) and other family-oriented fare. The fun starts at 1 p.m.

“I’ve talked to several people who tell me they’d love to come to Art Walk, but they can’t make it downtown on a Friday night,” says Clarissa French, the Art Walk communications director. “Because of that, we wanted to do something during daytime hours on the weekend to introduce families, seniors and weekend visitors to the fun and excitement that is downtown Springfield.”

Beginning at 6 p.m., we're hosting family-friendly acoustic musicians including the group Paleo (they're from out of town), musician Owen Pye (also from out of town) and Springfield pianist/guitarist Nathaniel Carroll.

It's time to make the Library a part of your First Friday Art Walk revelry!

In honor of everything exciting going on in downtown Springfield for Art Walk this evening, we're hosting a much-anticipated performance by a veteran of the local music scene, performer Eddie Gumucio. This FREE, all-ages show starts at 7 p.m. on our Community Stage.

But that's not all. Work by Springfield artist Julie Mignard is on display at Park Central Branch Library tonight and for the month of November.

Mignard tells us she's interested in how the mind creates order out of chaotic images. She says she likes to hear about what people see in her work... which is fantastic, as she'll be on hand to meet Library patrons tonight.

Her abstract paintings include acrylic works on paper, and she plans to bring some of her new small paintings made using melted Crayolas. There will also be a large handmade silk installation, "Floating Colors of Fall," on display, that Mignard has made specially for visitors to Park Central Branch Library.

The Park Central Branch Library is proud to host an Animated Film Series of movies from around the world, all shown FREE from our projector on the Community Stage. Our first installment, Persepolis, was a huge hit, giving Library patrons a taste of France and Iran.

On Friday, October 23 at 7 p.m., it's on to Japan with Spirited Away (Rated PG), a film about a slightly cranky ten-year-old girl named Chihiro whose family moves to a new town in the countryside, much to her displeasure. But Chihiro's adventures -- in a world of spirits and monsters -- are only beginning. If you liked the Japanese classic My Neighbor Totoro, you'll enjoy this show.

It's time to "walk the walk" for First Friday Art Walk, a monthly cultural happening throughout downtown Springfield. Our walls are decked with Springfield artist Kevin Kloppenberg's hand-cast paper art for the evening.

At 6 p.m. this First Friday, we'll also be hosting a kickoff event for the first-ever Missouri Literary Festival this weekend. First Friday Poetry @ Park Central Branch Library willl feature slam poets, student poets and other excitement for poetry-lovers. Meanwhile, the Missouri Literary Festival Short Fiction award-winners will be on hand.

We're introducing a new Animated Film Series, FREE at 7 p.m. the fourth Friday of the month.

First up: Persepolis, this Friday, September 25.

Based on Marjane Satrapi's international bestselling graphic novels, this French-language film (with subtitles) is based on the author's life story.

As a young girl in the 1970s, Marjane grows up amid the political turmoil of revolutionary Iran, a bystander as free-thinking family members are imprisoned by various governments in charge. When things get really bad, her progressive parents send her to boarding school in Europe... things might look easy, but appearances can be deceiving. Ultimately, this is a warm coming-of-age tale. Rated PG-13.

09.03.09: Discover the art of Jasper Johns!

This month's First Thursday Art Talk is an unusual treat, as Missouri State University art history major Kirstin Wiley gives us a look into the artistic vision of Jasper Johns.

Painter Jasper Johns was a major influence on art in the 20th century, a game-changer who, in the late 1950s, pushed the American arts scene away from Abstract Expressionism toward a down-to-earth appreciation of concrete imagery. This creative current eventually formed the basis for Pop Art and Minimalism, styles that are still popular even today.

Kristen will join us this Thursday, September 3 at 7 p.m. on the Park Central Stage.

Meanwhile, mark your calendars for November 5: Rachel Aubuchon, Missouri State art history major, presents "Controversies in Museums."

The Ozarks: Just That Much Hillbilly in Me

Have a love for Ozarks history? Join us at the Park Central Branch Library for a free viewing of the documentary, "The Ozarks: Just That Much Hillbilly in Me" at 7 p.m. Quickly becoming a classic, this historic and cultural account of the Ozarks culture was created by Missouri State's Media, Journalism and Film Professor, Mark Biggs in 1999.

Be introduced to (or reacquainted with) the history, culture and values of the people of the Ozarks. In contrast to popular depictions of "Ozarks hillbillies," you will be presented with a portrait of traditional Ozarkers as self-reliant, hard-working and independent people. Biggs shows us that traditional Ozarkers care deeply about what one Ozarker calls "those old American values" of family, church, community and land. Enjoy the archival images, music and commentary by historians, folklorists, and artists.

Park Central Square sidewalks are wide open! And parking is plentiful, too

You may have seen in the local news that car traffic is blocked from the Square right now as the City continues construction on the revamped park design. Everything's planned to be finished up between now and mid-September.

Meanwhile, the sidewalks are wide open here on the southwest side of the Square. Access to the Library, The Coffee Ethic and other spots along the edge of the Square is easy, whether you're walking from the bus station down the block or from your home in the neighborhood.

For folks driving in from the northside or the southside, it's easy to park in one of downtown's free, ample parking garages (just a couple blocks away) and make Park Central Library part of your downtown experience. (Fun fact: We're good at giving directions.)

Once again it's First Friday Art Walk time in downtown Springfield!

This month, we've got a FREE Park Central Sounds performance by local musician JR Top.

It's tonight at 7 p.m. on our Community Stage. Come out for this all-ages show!

"But... what about the art?" you ask.

We've got it! A special group exhibit just went up on our walls for the month of August. Local artists share their photographer's eye on scenes from urban Europe; their hand-crafty Ozarks quilts; and more.

Meanwhile, artist Ashley Berry's thought-provoking work gets a special extended run, as the show continues on display next door with our friends at The Coffee Ethic.

Some other Art Walk news:

• Fresh Gallery (SW corner of Walnut Street & Campbell Avenue) presents paintings by Ann Meese and jewelry Elaine Willig. Check out this new gallery, brought to you by the Springfield Regional Arts Council. The Arts Council also has some nifty Arts in the Park excitement tonight at the Creamery Arts Center, just across from Hammons Field.

• Our amigos at Global Fayre (NE corner of Walnut Street & Campbell Avenue) are presenting a show of hand-woven baskets made by women from two tribes in northern Botswana, Africa. Tonight GF is also hosting a Kiva Awareness Evening, showing how international microlending programs like Kiva can fight poverty and boost entrepreneurship worldwide.

• And in the world of sculpture, Obelisk Home (Phelps Street, just west of Benton Avenue) features striking works by Missouri native David Cogorno.

First Thursday Art Film: Rivers and Tides

This First Thursday we will be showing Rivers and Tides, a documentary on the art of Andy Goldsworthy.

This documentary follows Andy Goldsworthy's bohemian free spirit all over the world as he demonstrates and opens up about his creative process. From his long-winding rock walls and icicle sculptures to his interlocking leaf chains and multi-colored pools of flowers. Goldsworthy's painstakingly intricate masterpieces are made entirely of materials found in Mother Nature - who threatens and often succeeds in destroying his art, sometime before it is even finished.

The magic starts at 7 p.m. Free and fun for all ages, see you then.

This Friday at 7 p.m., Park Central Library presents "Get Creative: The Sound of Fun!"

This is a special event with kids in mind. Special guest Jessie Alexander-East, children's department manager at The Library Center, will lead a hands-on experience in musical creativity using home-made instruments fashioned from recycled materials.

Jessie will also "sing-read" from several children's books, including favorites Cows in the Kitchen by June Crebbin, Jazz on a Saturday Night by Leo Dillon, Charlie Parker Played BeeBop by Chris Raschka. (You can find all of them in your Library's collection, by the way.)

"And... I'll have cardboard tubes that we'll make kazoos with," says Jessie.

Coming soon: New morning hours

We're rolling out a change to our morning hours starting Monday, August 31.

At that time your Park Central Branch Library will open at 8:30 a.m. Monday through Saturday, like the other 10 branches in the Springfield-Greene County Library system.

Until August 31, we'll continue to open at 7 a.m. Our friends next door at The Coffee Ethic will continue opening at 7 a.m. before and after the 31st.

Our evening hours stay the same. We'll stay open until 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and until 10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday nights.

The later opening time comes not because we're cutting services. In fact, our patrons have been voting with their feet. More of you visit this Library at other times of day.

If we open later in the morning, we can schedule more Library staff to work the branch during the busiest times of day, especially in the afternoon. That means faster, better customer service, including...

*Less waiting in line when you want to check out or ask a reference question

*Faster turnaround time on books, music and DVDs that you've reserved. They'll show up on the holdshelf faster and be able to be checked out earlier

*More time for staff to provide the "extras," large and small, that you've said you appreciate... stuff like playing movies from around the world on our projector, keeping the facility clean and neat or working on arts and music programming for you to enjoy

We know some of you will miss being able to pop into Park Central at 7 a.m., but we think you'll appreciate having more Library staff on duty when we're open. Please don't hesitate to post your comments or write to our branch manager with your thoughts and suggestions for Park Central Branch Library. It's your Library; we want to hear from you!

A lot is on tap tonight for First Friday Art Walk in downtown Springfield! Let us count the ways in which we'll showcase art, music and local culture...

1. Park Central Branch Library is just one of more than 20 galleries and other spaces that participate in this month's kickoff to July 4 weekend.

2. Inside the branch, we're showing art by Ashley Berry that celebrates the African-American experience. Meanwhile, our Community Stage wall will broadcast some Elvis Costello and George Harrison for your listening pleasure. Here's a sneak preview (thanks, YouTube)...

3. Our friends next door at The Coffee Ethic are celebrating the release party for the second issue of The Hive, one of Springfield's hottest new local 'zines. (Did you know we have a rack full of local 'zines and music that you can check out, just like other library books and music CDs? 07.02.09: Art Talk with Ashley Berry

The local artist Ashley Berry shares her creative vision in tonight's Art Talk on the Community Stage, beginning at 7 p.m.

Berry is a Missouri State University student whose work ranges from two-dimensional pieces to sculpture. Her 2-D exhibition at Park Central Library this month is entitled "Terrene Darkness."

"My art is an analytical representation of black history and personal self-discovery," writes Berry in an artist's statement accompanying the show. "I long to unravel the truth, not only of my own origin, but also of the entire race of my people. Strong [knowledge about] African culture is not prominent prior to slavery in American history.

"Without knowing the whereabouts of my ancestors, I am left unfulfilled and disconnected, plagued with questions: Where they would be if they were never enslaved? How would life differ? What is my destiny?

"Since I don't know the answers to these questions, I fill the void with my interpretation of their reality. They convey pride, oppression, and influence that have left a mark within our society. I describe their beauty and authenticity, which I consider rich, unique and diverse.

"This is my personal memoir. These are my people."

Book Review: The New Self-Sufficient Gardener

John Seymour, a well known activist for environmentalism and self-sufficiency, initially penned this classic gardening manual in 1978. This new edition was published posthumously in 2008, bringing his no nonsense gardening tips to a new generation.

In these tough economic times self-sufficiency is on a lot of people's minds. Who hasn't considered starting a small garden as a means to cut the grocery bill? Chock full of gardening tips and colloquial wisdom, Seymour's how-to guide is the place to start.

This book has something to offer anyone on the gardening spectrum, novice to native. The full color plant identification guide, illustrated by Seymour himself, is both helpful and charming. You won't learn how to plant by the moon phases in this book (Seymour had little patience for these tactics), but you will find some "down to earth" wisdom packed into every page.

Park Central Branch is a proud participant in downtown Springfield's First Friday Art Walk, but did you know we've also got something cool going on the second Friday of the month?

It's Park Central Sounds, our series of FREE, all-ages shows by local musicians.

This Friday we are very pleased to welcome Storyline to our Community Stage!

Orchestrating a captivating Storyline is an art form. It implores the experience of each individual character to provide their unique perspective, that when intertwined with each other's journey, engages the onlooker. It's as if each character is a single thread, woven together to form a tapestry of situations that even the most casual of bystanders cannot help but wrap themselves up in.

With a preface of past experiences, Ashley, Geno, Zack, Bryant & Mike author a journey set deep in the heart of Missouri. Follow along as they orchestrate a medley of characters whose paths slowly intertwine through a maze of life's adventures. From the shelves at Park Central Library: Kanye West Presents Thank You and You're Welcome

Fun fact: Today is Kanye West's birthday, so in honor of that occasion we're posting a review of the bestselling rap artist/record producer's book, Kanye West Presents Thank You and You're Welcome.

You can find Thank You and You're Welcome on our shelves here at Park Central Branch Library, along with Kanye's latest album, 808s & Heartbreak. It takes just an easy search to find both items in the Library's collection and place them on hold for you. (Have your Library card ready; register for one here.)

Meanwhile, the book is a collection of savvy, street-smart wisdom expressed in one-line proverbs. Each one-liner illustrates a specific life lesson. With every thought, Kanye puts his stamp on it by telling the story of how and what he's learned so far in his 32 years of life.

The book's title comes from Kanye's approach to his work, hashed out when he collaborated with Common and other hip-hop artists. Select zingers include the following (note Kanye's love of exclamation points)....

06.05.09: First Friday Art Walk at Park Central Library

All kinds of spiffy excitements are taking place tonight in downtown Springfield in honor of First Friday Art Walk. Naturally, your Park Central Library is right there in the middle of it.

First off, we're welcoming the Park Central Square farmers' market, slated to do its first day of business starting this afternoon. From 3:30 through mid-evening, you'll be able to shop for locally grown produce just steps from our front doors, while enjoying music from Sounds on the Square, a lineup of diverse local acts that play each week, all summer long.

The Library's Gift Shop will be holding a tent sale on our front stoop, starting early evening and going until it's time to stop. All proceeds go to Friends of the Library.

Inside the branch, enjoy multimedia photography by the Springfield artist Debbi Raymer Joiner on our walls.

Then at 8 p.m., local musician Dallas Jones takes our Community Stage and promises a fantastic performance. Sample Jones's music, then come out for this FREE all-ages show.

Thursday, June 4 at 7 p.m., our Community Stage hosts local artist Debbi Raymer Joiner in a talk about her creative vision in photography.

Raymer Joiner works in a variety of photography styles, creating her images using the camera and Adobe Photoshop. When she's not doing art, she works at a local photo store and volunteers at the Humane Society.
